Custom Transformer at Australian Synchrotron

Southern Electronic Services (SES) produces prototypes, one-off transformers and small production runs, which are suited to the needs of universities and similar centres of learning.

Many tertiary institutions throughout Australia, including University of Melbourne, Monash University, RMIT, NMIT and University of South Australia have hired SES to supply transformers and wound components. We are able to manufacture and supply universities with custom transformer solutions due to the versatile nature of our production.

We have supplied many unusual transformers and wound components to universities, including components for the particle accelerator at the University of Melbourne. We also designed custom AC and DC variable power supplies, which we installed in the lecterns of lecture theatres in the Redmond Barry Building at University of Melbourne. These power supplies provide the physics lecturers with variable power solutions for experiments.

SES provides transformer components, including bobbins, laminations and brackets, to TAFE colleges to enable students to learn how to wind transformers as part of their training.

Shining Light on Power Transformer Solutions

The Australian Synchrotron at Monash University was built in 2007 and includes an SES custom transformer and components. A synchrotron is a huge machine (think football field!) that accelerates electrons to virtually the speed of light. As the electrons are deflected through magnetic fields they form an exceedingly bright light. This light is channelled down beamlines to experimental workstations.
Researchers utilise synchrotron light for research and development in biosciences;

Medical research such as microbiology, disease mechanisms, high-resolution imaging and cancer radiation therapy; environmental sciences; agriculture such as plant genomics; minerals exploration; advanced materials such as nanostructured materials and intelligent polymers; engineering; and forensics.

CSIRO Research relies on SES Power Transformer Units

The latest CSIRO research ship RV Investigator has many of our transformers on board to power various instruments, as did the CSIRO’s previous Antarctic supply ship “Aurora Australis”.

Several CSIRO divisions engage SES to supply custom transformer and wound component requirements. The CSIRO Division of Atmospheric Research at Aspendale, a Melbourne bayside suburb, has used our transformers and coils for many of its projects over the past decades.

SES is prepared and equipped to produce power transformer and wound component solutions for other CSIRO divisions or research organisations across Australia.
