SOUTHERN ELECTRONIC SERVICES
Southern Electronic Services was started as a partnership by Noel & Millicent Voller in the late 1960's.
Noel had a background in radio communication and continued to work in this field after World War 2 for about twenty years with Radio Corporation, which became Astor Radio. Astor produced domestic radio receivers, as "radios" were then called. Astor was taken over by Philips, who had many factories including those in Clarinda Rd, Clayton, and Hendon in South Australia.
Transformer production was the area Noel had become involved in, particularly the high volume production of transformers for radios, and the early television sets.
He often had requests to make small volumes of transformers, or even "one offs", but was forced to refuse due to the high volume production facility at Philips. With the blessing of his superiors, Noel starting making small numbers of transformers in his garage at home to fill this need.
As demand increased, Noel left Philips and, in partnership with his wife Millicent, set up Southern Electronic Services in the late '60's, in Pietro Rd, Heatherton. Southern Electronic Services grew out of the garage, and moved to a factory in Japaddy St, Mordialloc, in 1972, with an initial staff of about four.
Noel & Millicent changed the business from a partnership to a Proprietory Limited Company in July 1977, over thirty years ago.
SES moved premises from Mordialloc, to a new factory in, Dandenong South, at the end of 1989. This was when we started the "SD" series of part numbers - "Superior Drive". With a sealed floor and white painted walls in the factory, hot water in the basins, and carpet on the floor in the glass-walled office, things were definitely looking up! Progressive production improvements over subsequent years have included new winding machines, laminating machines, air-hydraulic crimping tools, rotary stripping machines, power files, vacuum varnishing, and pneumatic nut-sert tools as well as improved lighting, pallet racking, new work benches and seating. These advances have enabled us to expand our production capabilities, and the installation of electric winches & scissor-lift trolleys took some of the strain out of the work.
With major customers including Westinghouse Signals Australia, General Electric International, Gedge Systems, and GBC Scientific Instruments, Southern Electronic Services P/L continues to produce transformers for a wide range of Australian industry. Many of those companies export their products, incorporating our transformers, resulting in Southern Electronic Services transformers being currently used in some 85 countries around the world, including the three Australian research bases in Antarctica.
We are fortunate that we continue to enjoy an ongoing demand for our transformers & wound components. Our small niche in the market, catering for mainly short runs & special "one offs" seems to remain, although we all suffer the inevitable ups & downs of business.
The management & staff at SES continue to be dedicated to the design & manufacture of high quality transformers, competitively priced and delivered on time.
